ANSI Cast Iron Y-Strainer

Technical Requirement:
  1. Flange End: ANSI B16.1 (Class 125)
  2. Inspection & Test: API 598

Description

The Cast Iron Y-Strainer is a cost-effective mechanical filtration device designed to remove unwanted solids from liquid, gas, or steam pipelines. Featuring a compact Y-shaped body, it houses a perforated or wire mesh screen that traps debris such as sand, gravel, and scale. This valve is essential for protecting downstream process equipment including pumps, meters, control valves, and steam traps from damage or clogging, ensuring the longevity and efficiency of the piping system.

Technical Specifications:
  • Nominal Size (NPS): 2″ – 24″ (DN50 – DN600)
  • Pressure Rating: Class 125
  • Applicable Medium: Water, Steam, Oil, Air, Natural Gas
  • Suitable Temperature: -29°C to 230°C (-20°F to 450°F)

Application:

Y-Strainer is a very cost-effective filtration solution in many applications. In the case where the amount of material to be removed from the stream is relatively small, resulting in long intervals between screen cleaning, the screen can be cleaned manually by isolating the line and removing the strainer cover.

For applications with heavier dirt loads, the Cast Iron Y-Strainer can be fitted with a blow-down connection, allowing the screen to be flushed without removing it from the strainer body.

The Cast Iron Y-Strainer protects downstream equipment in many industries, including chemical processing, petroleum, power generation and shipbuilding. Y-strainers are especially common in water treatment, where they protect equipment that could be damaged or blocked by sand, gravel or other debris.

Besides water and steam, the Cast Iron Y-Strainer is also widely used on compressed air and natural gas lines within its Class 125 pressure rating.

Key Features & Applications:
  1. Versatile Filtration: Ideal for applications where the amount of material to be removed is relatively small, allowing for long intervals between cleaning.
  2. Easy Maintenance: The filter can be manually cleaned by closing the line and removing the bonnet cover. For heavier dirt loads, the strainer can be equipped with a “blow-down” connection (plug) to flush debris without removing the unit from the pipeline.
  3. Wide Application Range: Extensively used in chemical processing, petroleum, power generation, marine/ships, and water treatment facilities.
  4. Equipment Protection: Specifically designed to prevent damage or blockage caused by unwanted sand, gravel, and debris in water treatment and industrial processes.
